Connect the Dots

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) launched the Connect the Dots on Solar Energy: Generating Power for Generations campaign this year to highlight the many benefits that solar energy generates across five different themes: community solar, solar innovation, health and environment, solar workforce, and rooftop solar.

household savings

Household Savings: SETO is committed to reducing the cost of solar electricity 50% between 2020 and 2030. Reaching this cost target supports greater energy affordability for households across the country and will help more homes lower their energy bills with rooftop solar installations. Additionally, rooftop solar opens the door to federal solar energy tax credit eligibility for both homeowners and businesses.

economic opportunities

Economic Opportunities: Solar energy industry job growth represents the largest employment increase—12,256 workers (+3.7%)—out of all clean energy sectors from 2021 to 2022. SETO is helping to guide this boom of solar economic opportunity with its workforce development initiatives.

resilience and reliability

Grid Resilience and Reliability: SETO is funding innovators, like Operant Networks, whose technology is strengthening the cybersecurity of the U.S. energy grid as large amounts of renewable energy are continually added to the power system.

owning power production

Owning Your Power Production: Community solar programs enable households and communities that lack access to rooftop solar to own their energy future. SETO programs like the Low-Income Clean Energy Connector and Community Power Accelerator aim to increase the accessibility of community solar programs for low-income households, enabling them to start owning their power production.

environmental

Environment: SETO is funding research to investigate the reuse and recycling of photovoltaic system components, produce clean water using solar desalination systems, and better understand how solar installations, wildlife, and ecosystems interact to identify strategies that maximize benefits to the local environment.

The campaign also highlights how SETO's work is helping accelerate the development and deployment of solar technology to support an equitable transition to a decarbonized electricity system by 2035 and decarbonized energy sector by 2050.

SETO isn't done connecting the dots on solar energy! Stay tuned for updates in the new year. In the meantime, learn more about the benefits of solar energy to get a better idea of how solar energy investments grow over years to benefit individuals, communities, and the nation.
