Today, the U.S. Department of Energy announced the winners of the Solar 
District Cup Collegiate Design Competition Class of 2024 during a live event at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).  

The Solar District Cup challenges student teams to design and model solar-plus-storage systems to meet the energy needs and decarbonization goals of campus, Tribal, and urban mixed-use districts. Throughout the competition, cross-disciplinary students design proposals that reimagine how electric energy is generated, managed, and used in these various environments, while gaining industry experience and connections. The winners are:

Bring-Your-Own-District Use Case Divisionโ€ฏ 

  • First Place:โ€ฏPortland State University (Portland, OR) 
  • Second Place:โ€ฏManhattan College (Bronx, NY)  
  • Third Place: University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA)  

California State University, Northridge Use Case Divisionโ€ฏ 

  • First Place:โ€ฏUniversity of Utah (Salt Lake City, UT)  
  • Second Place:โ€ฏVillanova University (Villanova, PA)  
  • Third Place:โ€ฏThe George Washington University (Washington, DC)  

Miami University of Ohio Use Case Divisionโ€ฏ 

  • First Place:โ€ฏAppalachian State University (Boone, NC)  
  • Second Place:โ€ฏMacalester College (Saint Paul, MN)  
  • Third Place:โ€ฏThe Solar Dragons Team from Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA)  
  • Honorable Mention: Northeastern University (Boston, MA)  

University of Florida Use Case Divisionโ€ฏ 

  • First Place: The Ray Catchers Team from Boise State University (Boise, ID)  
  • Second Place: Kankakee Community College (Kankakee, IL)  

The University of Texas at Dallas Use Case Divisionโ€ฏ 

  • First Place:โ€ฏUniversity of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (Mayagรผez, PR)  
  • Second Place:โ€ฏThe University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, AL)  
  • Third Place:โ€ฏNorth Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC)  
  • Honorable Mention: The EcoDragons Team from Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA)  

University of Washington Use Case Divisionโ€ฏ 

  • First Place:โ€ฏThe Pennsylvania State University (Centre County, Pennsylvania) 
  • Second Place: Texas A&M University (College Station, TX) 
  • Third Place:โ€ฏColumbia University (New York, NY)  
  • Honorable Mention: University of Colorado Boulder (Boulder, CO)


The first-place teams pitched their concepts to a panel of industry experts. The judges then voted on the most promising design, selecting the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagรผez, the winner of the University of Texas Dallas Use Case Division, as the Project Pitch Champion.

Solar Energy Technologies Office  Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) announced the 10 teams selected to advance to the final phase of the multi-million dollar American-Made Solar Prize Round 7 . The finalists will each receive $100,000 in cash and compete in the next stage of the competition.
